I'M ANDREA JOHNSON
The Intentional Optimist
Helping you make sense of what’s not adding up—and what to do with it
This is my story...
I’ve spent years helping people think more clearly—about themselves, their choices, and how they show up in the world. The path that brought me here hasn’t been linear. It’s been shaped by moments where something didn’t sit right—where I had to stop, question what I thought I knew, and find a better way to make sense of it.
Growing up in South Korea taught me how to hold more than one perspective at a time. My work in higher education showed me how systems shape the way we think—and how easy it is to operate inside them without questioning what’s actually happening. Health challenges and adoption taught me something deeper: resilience isn’t about pushing through—it’s about learning when to pause, what to pay attention to, and what not to ignore.
That combination—of experience and reflection—became the foundation of my work.
I don’t start with leadership.
I start with what you’re noticing but haven’t fully trusted yet.
Because when something feels off—and you keep moving past it—it doesn’t go away. It just gets quieter.
Until you learn how to come back to it.
My work is about helping you do that. To slow down, recognize what’s actually happening, and respond in a way that aligns with who you are—not just what’s expected.
The frameworks I’ve developed support that process, but they’re not the starting point. The starting point is always the same: paying attention to what you’ve been brushing past and staying with it long enough to understand why.
This is the work behind what I call Intentional Optimism—choosing to see clearly, trust your instincts, and move forward without ignoring what’s real.
Today, I teach, coach, and work with people who are navigating complexity, tension, and change—and want a way to move forward that doesn’t require them to talk themselves out of what they’re seeing or second-guess themselves.
Experience & Background
I bring more than 25 years of experience working inside universities, organizations, and leadership spaces—helping people navigate complexity, change, and the moments that don’t have clear answers.
Much of my experience has been shaped inside deeply held belief systems, so I know what it’s like when something stops lining up—and how hard it can be to sort through that without talking yourself out of what you’re seeing.
My work has included developing leadership programs, coaching executives and teams, and designing learning experiences that support clearer thinking, stronger communication, and more grounded decision-making.
Along the way, I’ve been trained and certified in a range of coaching and leadership frameworks, including executive coaching, behavioral analysis, and process improvement. Those tools inform my work—but they’re not the focus.
What matters most is helping people slow down long enough to see what’s actually happening, and respond in a way that aligns with who they are.
What I Believe
Leadership is learned in reflection, not reaction.
The ability to pause, notice, and think clearly changes how you show up everywhere.
Values are the foundation of sustainable growth.
They’re not something you have to create—they’re already there, accessible, and waiting to be trusted when things get unclear.
Critical thinking is a form of personal freedom—and it’s something you can learn.
You don’t have to stay stuck in patterns you’ve outgrown or explanations that no longer hold.
Resilient leadership is calm authority in motion.
It’s what allows you to move forward without rushing, forcing, or ignoring what’s real.
These beliefs shape how I teach, coach, and work with people—creating space to think, reflect, and respond with clarity.
